Review of Cochrane Studies Reveals Most Effective Ways to Quit Smoking

Time to read 2 min

A systematic review of each of the Cochrane reports released between 2021 and 2023 has revealed the best way for smokers to kick the habit, once and for all.

Several reviews were included in the study, which was summarised by the lead author Dr Jonathan Livingstone-Banks. The study is part of the work performed by the Cochrane tobacco Addiction Group, which is also known as TAG.

What are the Best Ways to Quit Smoking?

As expected, the review of all the Cochrane studies has revealed that vaping is one of the best three ways to quit nicotine. The best ways to quit smoking – according to the Cochrane studies – are as follows:

  • Vaping or using an electronic cigarette
  • Chantrix or Champix, also known as Varenicline
  • Cystisine

The paper indicates there is strong evidence that the above three methods help smokers to quit best.

Quit smoking Using a Vape Device

You can quit smoking using a vape device or electronic cigarette. This process is best begun by using a disposable vape device in tobacco flavour. This will hit your throat in the same way as a cigarette. However, you may find you are constantly puffing on it because it does not contain the levels of nicotine you are used to, should you be a heavy smoker.

If this is the case, move on to a pod vape kit or a starter vape kit. You can then add stronger nicotine vape juice, should you need it. You can learn about what vape is best to use to quit smoking here.

What is Chantrix/Champix?

Chantrix or Champix are both commercial names given to the drug Varenicline. This drug works by blocking the brains nicotine receptors, preventing it from having the effect on your brain which it normally would. This is available in nasal spray or as a pill. By blocking off the brain’s access to satisfaction from nicotine, it takes away the addictive nature of smoking, making cigarettes unappealing. This can eventually force the user to give up.

Quitting Smoking with Cystisine

Cystisine is a plant-based supplement which is available in alkaloid form. It comes from Europe and may take the names baptitoxine, cytisinicline, or sophorine. The UK made this plant-based drug available on prescription for those that want to quit smoking. Drugs.com lists a whole number of studies which prove the efficacy of this compound as a smoking cessation method.

Which Cochrane Studies were Included?

Authors Livingstone-Banks, Lindon, and Hartmann-Boyce evaluated all the available reviews between 2021 and 2023. Notably, they mention the NRT review, the electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation review, and the 2023 review of pharmacological and e-cigarette intervention.
